Wow. The nostalgic button-masher is looking (and playing) better than ever!
Tribute Games and Dotemu revealed at Summer Games Fest that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is dropping onto PlayStation 5/4, Nintendo Switch, XBox, and PC next week.
Casey Jones, who carries multiple weapons in a golf bag strapped to his back, is an unlockable character, so you don’t get him right away.
The six-player co-op, meanwhile, looks absolutely bonkers. The art style of Shredder’s Revenge – it looks similar to the original Konami game yet refined – but there’s still a lot going on the screen. It can get a bit confusing, especially on the smaller screen Switch version. But hey, I got used to the craziness of Super Smash Brothers and do not expect TMNT to be any different.
“[W]hen you’re playing the arcade mode, [it’s] kind of like the classic arcade experience,” Tribute Games designer Frederic Gemus told The Gamer in early 2022. “[Y]ou start with the character and a set amount of credits and you go through the whole game and get extra credits by defeating enemies. Meanwhile, in the story mode, the game is more focused on exploration and completing each level one after the others and unlocking stuff on the world map. And each of your characters has a power level, so it’s a bit like an RPG with some soft leveling up.”
Shredder’s Revenge is a spiritual successor to Konami’s popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games of the ‘80s and ‘90s. The beat ‘em up obviously includes all four mega-bodacious turtles as playable characters, but you’ll also be able to step into the shoes of allies like Splinter, reporter April O’Neil, and the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones, the last of which was just revealed.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge has been highly-anticipated since its original reveal back in 2021, thanks mostly to its gorgeous, vibrant, pixelated visuals. And with a development team made up of folks who worked on the recently revived Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, it’s sure to provide hours of mindless button-mashing as the turtles protect their city from Shredder’s influence.
I’m definitely grabbing this one the second it comes out. The only question will be… am I getting the Nintendo Switch or PS4 version?
